Sowing instructions

Scopolia carniolica, also known as Carniolan ragwort or Carinthian ragwort, is a fascinating plant that is particularly appreciated for its beautiful, bell-shaped flowers. To sow the seeds successfully, you should first mix them in a container with moist sand or vermiculite and stratify them in the refrigerator for about 2-3 weeks. Then sow the seeds in the spring in seed trays or directly outdoors. Cover the seeds lightly with soil and keep them evenly moist, but not wet. The ideal location is semi-shady to shady, as the plant prefers shady woodland habitats.

Tips and tricks

  • Soil qualityScopolia carniolica prefers humus-rich, well-drained soil. You can enrich the soil with some compost or leaf soil to improve the germination conditions.
  • IrrigationKeep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging as this can damage the roots.
  • TemperatureThe seeds germinate best at temperatures between 15-20°C. Make sure that the temperature does not fluctuate too much.
  • ProtectionProtect the young plants from direct sunlight and strong winds by placing them in a sheltered corner of your garden.
  • PropagationYou can also propagate Scopolia carniolica by division in fall or spring.
  • Germination hormonesFor easier germination of the seeds we recommend gibberillic acid or GA3.

Worth knowing

Scopolia carniolica belongs to the nightshade family (Solanaceae) and is native to the forests of central and south-eastern Europe. The plant is not only known for its attractive flowers, but also for its interesting history and use in folk medicine. Its roots contain alkaloids, which were once used as a remedy, but can also be toxic. You should therefore exercise caution when handling the plant and avoid planting it near children or pets. In garden design, Scopolia carniolica makes an excellent underplanting for shady areas and adds a touch of mysticism to your garden.
