Sowing instructions:

Ideally, you should start sowing in spring when there is no longer any risk of frost. Find a sunny to semi-shady location for your lantern flowers.

  1. Preparation of the floor: Loosen the soil and remove weeds and stones. Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii prefers well-drained soil, so you can work in sand or gravel to improve drainage.
  2. Sowing: Sow the seeds evenly on the prepared area and cover them lightly with soil. Press the soil down gently to ensure that the seeds have good soil contact.
  3. Irrigation: Keep the soil evenly moist until the seeds germinate. However, avoid excessive watering to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
  4. Germination: Germination may vary depending on conditions and seed quality. Be patient and keep the soil moisture constant to support germination.

Tips and tricks:

  • Plant protection: Lampion flowers are relatively easy to care for, but they can be eaten by slugs and snails. Use organic slug pellets or slug fences to protect your plants.
  • Winter care: The plants die back above ground in winter, but the roots remain alive. You can cut back the dead stems in the fall to improve the appearance of your garden.

Worth knowing:

  • Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii Gigantea, also known as giant lantern flower, is a robust perennial known for its bright orange lanterns in autumn.
  • The lanterns can be both decorative and edible and are often used in dried flower arrangements or made into jams and preserves.
  • These plants also attract birds, which can use the lanterns as a source of food.
