The tomato variety Alicante is a classic, high-yielding vine tomato that is characterized by its intense flavour and juicy fruits. With these seeds, you can easily grow this popular variety in your garden, greenhouse or on the balcony. Here you can find out step by step how to achieve the best results.

Sowing instructions

You can use the Alicante-Sow tomato seeds from February to the end of March in a seed tray or directly in small pots. Make sure the seeds are about 0.5 cm deep in nutrient-rich potting compost. Place the pots in a bright, warm place (approx. 20-25°C). Germination usually takes place after 7-14 days. As soon as the seedlings are big enough, you can transfer them to larger pots or into the open ground. However, wait until after the Ice Saints to avoid frost damage.

Harvest, use & storage

The first fruits of the Alicante can be harvested from July. This tomato variety produces numerous, medium-sized, bright red tomatoes that are ideal for salads, sauces or snacking. The harvest period can last until October. Harvested tomatoes should be stored at room temperature as this is the best way to preserve their flavor. They will keep for about a week.

Tips & Tricks

• To encourage fruit production, you should regularly pinch out the side shoots.
• The plants require a climbing support as they can grow up to 1.8 meters high.
• Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Always water directly at the base of the plant to prevent fungal infestation.
• Additional fertilization every 2-3 weeks with tomato fertilizer increases the yield.

The Alicante is one of the most popular tomato varieties in the UK and is known for its robustness. It is particularly resistant to diseases such as late blight. Its compact growth makes it ideal for growing in containers or smaller gardens.
