Sowing instructions

To grow Diospyros lotus seeds successfully, start sowing in spring or fall. First soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours to promote germination. Then plant the seeds about 1-2 cm deep in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Keep the soil constantly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Ideal germination temperatures are between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. Cover the planter with a thin layer of sand and place it in a bright, warm place.

Tips and tricks

Patience is key when germinating Diospyros lotus seeds, as it can take between 4 and 12 weeks. Use a mini-greenhouse or plastic bag to keep the humidity constant. Ventilate daily to avoid mold growth. Once the seedlings are strong enough, transplant them into individual pots. Make sure that the young plants receive enough light but are protected from direct sunlight. Regular fertilizing with an organic fertilizer promotes growth.

Diospyros lotus, also known as lotus plum or date plum, originally comes from Asia and is known for its sweet, edible fruit. The tree can grow up to 10 meters tall and impresses with its dark green, shiny leaves. The fruits are small, dark blue to black and ripen in the fall. Diospyros lotus is not only an asset to any garden, but also a valuable food source for birds and other wildlife. The plant is relatively easy to care for and can also overwinter in colder regions if it is well protected.
