If you want to grow Luffa aegyptiaca seeds, also known as sponge cucumber or loofah, there are a few important steps to consider. Luffa plants thrive best in a warm, sunny climate. Start by sowing the seeds in well-drained soil, about 2 cm deep. The best time for sowing is late spring, when there is no longer any risk of frost. It is advisable to pre-grow the seeds in pots or seedbeds first and to plant the young plants outdoors later.

Tips and tricks

• Choice of location: Luffa needs a lot of sun, at least 6-8 hours a day. Therefore, choose a sunny location.
• Irrigation: Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Luffa loves moist conditions, but its roots must not stand in water.
• climbing aid: Luffa plants grow as climbing plants. Provide a sturdy climbing support or trellis so that the plants can climb up it.
• Fertilization: Use organic fertilizer or compost regularly during the growing season to support the plants.
• Harvest: The fruits are ready to harvest around 150-200 days after sowing. Wait until they are fully ripe and dry before harvesting to get the best sponges.
