Sowing instructions

To grow Luffa cylindrica successfully, you should start the seeds indoors about four to six weeks before the last frost. Fill small pots with nutrient-rich potting compost and place the seeds about 1 cm deep. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not too wet. Cover the pots with a transparent film to retain moisture and place them in a warm, sunny spot. Germination usually takes place within one to two weeks at a temperature of 20-25°C.

Tips and tricks

After the last frost, the young plants can be moved outdoors. Choose a location with plenty of sun and well-drained soil. Plant the loofahs about 60 cm apart to give them enough space to grow. Support the vines with a trellis or other climbing aid to give the plants support and keep the fruit clean. Water regularly, especially during flowering and fruiting, but avoid waterlogging. A layer of mulch can help retain moisture in the soil and suppress weeds.

The fruits should be harvested when they are fully ripe and the skin is hard. In addition to sponge production, young fruits can also be used in the kitchen like zucchinis. The plants also promote biodiversity in your garden by attracting insects.
