Sowing instructions

The seeds of the variety "Magenta Sunset" are easy to grow and particularly suitable for amateur gardeners. Sow the seeds directly outdoors from March as soon as the soil is frost-free. Choose a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Make approx. 2 cm deep seed furrows with a distance of 30 cm between the rows. Sow the seeds 5-10 cm apart and cover them lightly with soil. Keep the soil moist at all times during the germination phase, which lasts around 10-14 days.

Tip: For a longer harvest period, you can resow at intervals of two to three weeks until July.

Harvest, use & storage

The first young leaves of "Magenta Sunset" can be harvested as a tender salad after about 6 weeks. The tubers reach their full size after about 3-4 months. Harvest them when they are 5-10 cm in diameter - then they are particularly tender and aromatic.

They can be used in a variety of ways: whether raw in salads, cooked as a side dish or pureed in soups - the deep red color and sweet, earthy taste make the turnip a highlight in the kitchen. Store the tubers in a cool, dry and dark place, for example in sand, to preserve their freshness for several months.

Tips and tricks

• Remove weeds regularly: Young plants benefit from a weed-free environment.
• Mulching: A thin layer of mulch keeps the moisture in the soil and reduces the amount of care required.
• Thinning: After germination, you can separate the plants to give the stronger specimens more space.
• Note neighbors: Good neighbors are onions, beans and lettuce.
