Sowing instructions

The cultivation of Capparis spinosa, also known as (true) caper bush, begins with the correct sowing of the seeds. First, you should soak the seeds in warm water for about 24 hours to promote germination. Then fill a pot with well-drained soil and press the seeds lightly into the surface. Cover them only thinly with soil. Place the pot in a warm, sunny spot and keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet. You should see the first seedlings within 2 to 4 weeks.

Tips and tricks

The caper bush prefers a location with plenty of sun and little water. When the plants are large enough, you can transplant them outdoors. Make sure to choose a sandy, well-drained soil to avoid waterlogging, which could damage the roots. Once established, caper bushes are very drought tolerant and only require infrequent watering. In winter, you should protect the plants from frost, either by covering them or bringing them into a frost-free room.

Worth knowing

Capparis spinosa is not only known for its edible flower buds, the capers, but also for its attractive, fragrant flowers. The plant can grow up to 1 meter tall and forms long, hanging branches that are perfect for hanging baskets or as ground cover. Capers are a delicious ingredient in many Mediterranean dishes and offer numerous health benefits, including antioxidant properties and aiding digestion. The plant is also very robust and can withstand extreme climatic conditions.
