Sowing instructions
Would you like to enrich your garden with Crithmum maritimum, also known as sea fennel? Then you've come to the right place! Growing this versatile plant is straightforward and has many benefits. Start by sowing the seeds in well-drained, slightly moist soil. You can sow the seeds directly outdoors in spring or fall, or pre-grow them by sowing them indoors in pots or trays. Make sure that the location is sunny to partially shaded and that the temperature is between 15 and 20°C. The seeds need light to germinate well, so you should only cover them lightly or simply scatter them on the surface.
Harvest, use & storage
As soon as the plants have reached a height of around 20 to 30 cm, you can start harvesting. The tender leaves and stems are at their best when they are fresh and young. Harvest regularly to encourage the plant to grow. You can use the cut parts in the kitchen - they add a deliciously spicy flavor to your dishes, ideal for salads, soups or as a garnish for fish and seafood. After harvesting, you should ideally use the leaves fresh, but you can also dry them or store them in a refrigerator to extend their shelf life.
Tips & Tricks
For a particularly successful cultivation of sea fennel, make sure that the soil is well aerated and that there is no waterlogging. Regular but moderate watering is important, as the plant appreciates somewhat salty conditions. If you prune the plant regularly, you will promote vigorous growth and a dense leaf structure. The use of organic fertilizer can also support plant development and improve crop yields.
