Sowing instructions

If you want to grow Allium porrum "Blue Solaise" yourself, it's relatively easy! Ideally, the seeds should be sown in early spring, between February and April, either in a greenhouse or on a windowsill. Use nutrient-rich potting soil and sow the seeds approx. 1 cm deep. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. The first seedlings will appear after about 2-3 weeks. When the plants are about 10 cm high, you can transfer them to the open ground or raised bed. Make sure they are planted about 15 cm apart so that the leeks have enough space to grow.

Harvest, use & storage

Blue Solaise is usually harvested in late fall, around 5 to 6 months after sowing. This variety is characterized by its intense blue colouring, which is particularly effective in the cooler months. You can use the leek fresh - ideal in soups, stews or as a side dish. If you want to store them, you can simply wrap the stalks in sand in a cool, dark place. This will keep them fresh for weeks. Alternatively, you can also freeze the leeks.

Tips & Tricks

To make your "Blue Solaise" leek plants particularly vigorous, you should regularly mound them up. This means piling up soil around the lower part of the stems to encourage white, tender shafts. Also make sure the location is sunny to partially shaded and loosen the soil regularly to prevent waterlogging. A light frost before harvesting enhances the beautiful blue color and improves the taste of the leeks.

Worth knowing

"Blue Solaise is an old French leek variety that is particularly frost-hardy and robust. Even at temperatures as low as -15 °C, the leek remains undamaged outdoors, making it an ideal winter variety. The beautiful blue coloring also adds a decorative touch to your garden. This variety is also particularly resistant to many diseases and pests, which makes cultivation even easier.
