Growing instructions:
These seeds are light germinators, which is why they should only be covered very thinly or not at all with a permeable substrate (cactus soil or similar).
Fill the seed pots with a loose mixture of cactus soil and potting compost, spray with water and place the seeds on the soil. It is best to cover the pots with plastic foil and air them daily or keep the soil moist. The pots can also be placed in suitable propagators until the seeds have germinated and the seedlings are a few centimetres tall. It is important to ensure a supply of fresh air at least once a day to prevent and avoid mold.
After germination of seeds seedlings can be slowly accustomed to the drier indoor air or fresh air outdoors after a few weeks.
Requires a sunny location outdoors and a good water-draining substrate or soil in which to plant it.
Interesting facts about Tagetes Minuta:
The marigold plant is widely used in companion planting programs. Secretions from the roots of growing plants have an insecticidal effect on the soil, they are effective against nematodes and to some extent against slugs. These secretions are produced about 3 - 4 months after sowing. The root secretions also have an herbicidal effect and inhibit the growth of certain nearby plants. It has been shown to be effective against perennial weeds such as Ranunculus ficaria (celandine), Gechoma hederacea (ground ivy), Agropyron repens (couch grass) and Convolvulus arvensis (field bindweed).
The whole plant has antispasmodic, aromatic, diaphoretic, diuretic, laxative and stomachic properties. It is used internally to treat gastritis, indigestion and parasites or worms. It is used externally to treat hemorrhoids and skin infections. The plant is harvested when it is in flower and dried for later use.
An essential oil distilled from the leaves and flower stems harvested when the plant seeds are forming is used as an insect repellent. It is also used in perfumery. Dried plants can also be hung indoors as an insect repellent.
The dried leaves are often used as a spice for soups and vegetables. They give an apple-like flavor. An essential oil extracted from the distilled plant and harvested from the flowers is used as a flavoring in ice cream, baked goods, soft drinks, etc.
