Sowing instructions:

Momordica charantia seeds are relatively easy to care for and can be successfully grown in most temperate climates. To achieve optimum results, we recommend the following sowing instructions:

  1. Prepare the floor: Loosen the soil well and mix it with plenty of compost or organic fertilizer to ensure good drainage and nutrient supply.
  2. Sowing: Place the seeds about 2-3 centimetres deep in the prepared soil. Make sure to distribute them evenly and leave enough space between the seeds so that the plants can develop well later.
  3. Location and light: Make sure that the sowing site receives sufficient sunlight, ideally at least 6-8 hours per day.
  4. Irrigation: Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging as this can lead to root rot.
  5. Germination and care: Seed germination can take between 7 and 14 days depending on conditions. Once the seedlings appear, thin them out to make room for growth and mulch around the plants to retain moisture and inhibit weed growth.

Tips and tricks:

  • Support the "climbing behavior": As Momordica charantia is a climbing plant, you can use a trellis or climbing aid to help it climb upwards and save space.
  • Harvest regularly: Harvest the bitter melons regularly when they are still young and green to avoid a bitter taste and promote continuous production.
  • Protection from frost: This plant is sensitive to frost, so you should cover it in cold weather or move it to a sheltered area.

Worth knowing:

  • Health benefits: Momordica charantia is not only an interesting plant for the garden, but also for cooking and health. The bitter melon is rich in antioxidants and is valued in some cultures for its medicinal properties.
  • Versatile use: Bitter melon is used in many Asian cuisines for soups, curries and salads. Its slightly bitter note gives dishes a unique flavor.
  • Insect-friendly: The yellow flowers of Momordica charantia attract bees and other pollinating insects, which helps to promote biodiversity in your garden.
