Commiphora myrrha, also known as the myrrh tree, is an unusual, drought-resistant plant native to the desert regions of Africa and Arabia. It is particularly known for its aromatic resin, which has been used for thousands of years in medicine, cosmetics and religious ceremonies. The myrrh tree is a robust, slow-growing plant that is ideal for warm, dry locations or as an exotic container plant.

Sowing instructions

Germination of Commiphora myrrha requires patience, as the seeds often take a long time to germinate. Pre-treatment can help to improve the germination rate.

Sowing time: All year round in warm climates or in spring
Germination period: 4-8 weeks at 22-30 °C
Seeding depth: Plant 1-2 cm deep in well-drained, sandy soil
Planting distance: 50-100 cm (for outdoor cultivation)
Location: Sunny, dry and well-drained soil
Pouring: Water moderately, dry phases are conducive to growth

To promote germination, you can soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. Myrrh prefers a hot and dry climate - in colder regions it is best suited as a container plant.

Harvest, use & storage

Over time, Commiphora myrrha forms the coveted myrrh resin, which exudes through natural cracks in the bark or can be harvested specifically.

Harvest time: After several years, when the tree is mature
Use: For resin extraction, as an ornamental plant for dry locations or as a bonsai
Storage: Store seeds in a dry and cool place, keep resin airtight

The resin obtained is traditionally used in naturopathy, perfume production and incense.

Tips and tricks

Use a mineral substrate with a high sand content for optimum root development.
In cool climates, a heated greenhouse or a sunny window spot is suitable for growing.
The myrrh tree grows slowly, but requires minimal care and is extremely resistant to drought.
Protect young plants from frost, as Commiphora myrrha is not hardy.

Worth knowing

Commiphora myrrha belongs to the balsam tree family (Burseraceae) and is closely related to the frankincense tree (Boswellia). Its resin has been used for medicinal and ritual purposes for thousands of years. The plant grows in extremely dry areas and is perfectly adapted to desert conditions.
