The variety Papaver somniferum "Zahir" captivates with its exceptionally beautiful flowers and impressive seed capsules. With its delicate, violet to purple flowers and robust growth habit, it is an asset to any garden. In addition to their decorative effect, the seeds are also suitable for consumption.

Sowing instructions

Papaver somniferum "Zahir" is an uncomplicated plant that can be sown directly outdoors.

• Sowing time: Sow directly into the bed from March to May. Autumn sowing (September-October) is also possible.
• Location: Sunny to semi-shady, prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil.
• Sowing depth: Light germinators - only press the seeds lightly and do not cover them with soil.
• Germination period: 10-20 days at temperatures around 10-20 °C.
• Planting distance: About 20-30 cm between the plants.
• Care: Separate after emergence so that the plants have enough space. Water regularly, avoid waterlogging.

Harvest, use & storage

• Harvest time: The capsules are ready for harvest in late summer (July-August) as soon as they turn beige to brownish.
• Use: The seeds are edible and ideal for baked goods, muesli or salads.
• Storage: Store the dried seeds in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

Tips and tricks

• Sowing on snow cover (winter sowing) can improve germination in spring.
• Poppies grow best when they are not moved - sow them directly!
• Light pruning after flowering promotes the formation of new flowers.
• If you allow a few capsules to mature, the plant will reproduce naturally by self-seeding.
