Sowing instructions
- Choose the right location: Lophophora prefers a sunny location with well-drained soil. Make sure that the location is protected from strong winds and offers enough space, as the peyote cactus grows slowly and can react sensitively to movement.
- Soil preparation: Loosen the soil thoroughly and remove weeds and large stones. Lophophora thrives best in a sandy or gravelly soil with good drainage. If necessary, add sand or gravel to improve the permeability of the soil.
- Seed procurement: Obtain high-quality Lophophora seeds from a trustworthy source. Make sure to choose fresh seeds to ensure good germination.
- Sowing time: The best times for sowing Lophophora seeds are in spring or early summer when the soil temperatures are warm enough. Sow the seeds about 1 to 2 centimeters deep in the prepared soil and keep it evenly moist.
- Germination and care: Lophophora seeds can take several weeks to months to germinate as the process is slow. Keep the seedlings moist and protect them from strong sunlight. Once the seedlings become stronger, you can carefully transplant them to provide enough space for them to grow.
Tips and tricks
- Regular watering: Lophophora plants only require occasional watering during the growing season. Make sure to allow the soil to dry out well between waterings to avoid waterlogging, as this can lead to root rot.
- Protection against frost: Lophophora cacti are sensitive to cold temperatures and can be damaged by frost. Make sure that you protect the plants sufficiently during the cold seasons by protecting them from strong temperature fluctuations or placing them in sheltered areas.
- Special care during the resting phase: Lophophora cacti have a dormant period in winter during which their growth slows down or even stops. Reduce watering during this time and keep the plants dry to prevent the formation of rot.
Worth knowing
- Lophophora is a genus of cacti from the cactus family (Cactaceae), which is native to the dry desert regions of North and Central America. The peyote cactus, Lophophora williamsii, is known for its psychoactive properties and is used by some indigenous peoples for ritual and spiritual purposes.
- The use of peyote is restricted or prohibited by law in many countries, as the consumption of psychoactive substances poses health risks and can lead to legal consequences. If you grow peyote cacti, be aware that the plant is protected and certain legal regulations must be observed.
- Apart from their ethnobotanical uses, Lophophora cacti are also popular for their attractive appearance and low-maintenance nature. They are well suited for growing in dry gardens, succulent beds or as houseplants and can provide years of enjoyment if cared for properly.
