Sowing instructions

Physalis ixocarpa "Green", also known as Tomatillo, is an easy-care plant that is rich in delicious fruits. For successful sowing, it is best to start about 6-8 weeks before the last frost date in spring. The seeds should be sown in pots or a seed tray in well-drained potting compost. Cover the seeds only lightly with soil and keep the substrate constantly moist, but not wet. The ideal germination temperature is around 20-25 °C. The first seedlings will appear after about 7-14 days. As soon as the plants are strong enough and there is no longer any danger of frost, you can plant them outdoors.

Tips and tricks

Tomatillos need plenty of space and sun to grow optimally. Therefore, plant them in a sunny location with sufficient space of around 60 cm between the plants. A sheltered spot also promotes growth. To ensure a rich harvest, it is advisable to grow several plants, as tomatillos are cross-pollinators. Also make sure to water the plants regularly and fertilize them when necessary to promote vigorous growth. A layer of mulch can help retain soil moisture and reduce weed growth.
