Euphorbia amygdaloides "Purpurea" seeds

Euphorbia amygdaloides "Purpurea", also known as purple spurge, is an attractive, evergreen perennial with striking purple foliage and bright yellow-green flowers. This easy-care plant brings structure and color to flower beds, rock gardens or natural gardens and is also extremely drought-resistant.

Sowing instructions

They can be sown directly outdoors or in pots. As the seeds require a cold period for germination (cold germinator), sowing in the fall or cold stratification is advisable.

  • Sowing time: Fall to spring
  • Germination period: 4-8 weeks (after cold period)
  • Seeding depth: Cover 1-2 mm with soil
  • Planting distance: 30-40 cm
  • Location: Sunny to semi-shady, well-drained soil
  • Pouring: Water moderately, avoid waterlogging

Young plants develop slowly, but reward you with long-lasting, easy-care flowering and attractive leaves.

Harvest, use & storage

After flowering, Euphorbia amygdaloides "Purpurea" forms seed capsules which burst open when ripe and disperse the seeds.

  • Harvest time: Summer to fall
  • Use: Ornamental plant for flower beds, borders, natural gardens and dry locations
  • Storage: Store seeds in a cool and dry place, ideally with a cold period for better germination

Tips and tricks

  • Wear gloves when cutting, as the milky juice can be irritating to the skin.
  • Combine them with grasses or other wintergreen perennials for interesting color contrasts.
  • The plant is very drought-resistant - ideal for low-maintenance gardens and sunny locations.
  • Pruning after flowering promotes a compact growth habit.

Worth knowing

Euphorbia amygdaloides belongs to the spurge family and is particularly popular with wild bees and butterflies. Its striking foliage provides year-round color in the garden, while its flowers provide an important source of food for insects in spring.
