Sowing instructions

To successfully grow Angelica sylvestris "Vicar's Mead" from seed, start in spring or fall. The seeds need a cold germination phase to germinate optimally. Sprinkle the seeds onto moist potting compost and press them down lightly without covering them. Place the tray in a cool place, ideally between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. The first seedlings should appear after 3-6 weeks. As soon as the seedlings are big enough, you can prick them out and transplant them into the open ground or into larger pots.

Tips and tricks

Angelica sylvestris "Vicar's Mead" prefers a semi-shady location with moist, well-drained soil. Avoid very sandy or clayey soils, as these can stress the plant. As angelica is a biennial plant, it produces a strong rosette of leaves in the first year and the characteristic inflorescences in the second year. Mulching the soil helps to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Cut off the faded inflorescences to prevent seed formation if you want to avoid uncontrolled spreading.

Worth knowing

Angelica sylvestris "Vicar's Mead" is characterized by its deep red to purple leaf colouring, which forms an attractive contrast to green plants in your garden. The plant attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to semi-natural gardens. Angelica is traditionally used in naturopathy, particularly for its digestive and anti-inflammatory properties. The 'Vicar's Mead' variety is not only beautiful, but also robust and easy to care for, ideal for novice and experienced gardeners alike.
