The seeds of the Glycyrrhiza glabraalso known as real licorice, allow you to cultivate this fascinating and useful plant in your own garden. Licorice is not only known for its sweet roots, but also for its pretty purple flowers and healing properties.

Sowing instructions

To ensure that your licorice plants germinate successfully, you should first soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. You can then sow them in potting compost or directly outdoors.

• Sowing time: Spring to early summer
• Germination temperature: 18-22 °C
• Germination period: 2-4 weeks
• Location: Sunny to semi-shady
• Floor: Loose, nutrient-rich, well-drained

Make sure that the seeds are only lightly covered with soil, as they are light germinators. Keep the soil moist at all times, but avoid waterlogging.

Harvest, use & storage

The licorice roots need about 3-4 yearsuntil they are ready to harvest. Then you can carefully dig out the roots, clean and dry them.

Use:

• In the kitchen as a natural sweetener
• For the production of tea or extracts
• In naturopathy as a remedy for coughs and stomach complaints

You can store the dried roots in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.

Tips and tricks

• Licorice is hardy, but should be protected with a layer of mulch in very cold regions.
• The plant can grow up to 1.5 meters high - so plan enough space.
• Regular pruning promotes growth and root formation.
• Ideal for permaculture gardens, as the plant enriches the soil with nitrogen.

Worth knowing

Licorice is one of the oldest known medicinal plants and was already valued in ancient Egypt. The main active ingredient Glycyrrhizin is up to 50 times sweeter than sugarwhich is why the plant is often used in confectionery and medicines. However, licorice should be consumed with caution in large quantities, as it can increase blood pressure.
