Sowing instructions

Red leaf mustard (Brassica juncea " Red Giant") is a versatile plant that thrives both in the garden and in pots on the balcony. Start sowing in spring or fall when temperatures are between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius. Sow the seeds directly in the open ground by making shallow grooves about 1 cm deep. Make sure to spread the seeds 20 cm apart and cover them lightly with soil. Keep the soil evenly moist until the seedlings appear after about 7-10 days.

Tips and tricks

To ensure a continuous harvest, resow every two weeks. Red leaf mustard prefers a sunny to semi-shady location and well-drained soil. Mulch the plants lightly to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize the leaf mustard with an organic fertilizer to promote vigorous growth. Cut the leaves regularly once they have reached a height of around 10-15 cm. This encourages new growth and prevents the plants from flowering and becoming woody.

Red leaf mustard is not only a visual highlight in the garden, but also has many culinary uses. The leaves have a spicy, mustard-like taste and are ideal for salads, sandwiches and Asian dishes. They are also rich in vitamins A, C and K as well as antioxidants, which support your health. As Brassica juncea is cold-tolerant, you can also harvest fresh leaves in the colder months. Note that the plant is pest-resistant, but can occasionally be attacked by aphids and cabbage flies. In such cases, natural plant protection products or spraying with water can help.
