Sowing instructions

Solanum ferox, also known as hairy eggplant, is easy to grow in your own garden or on the balcony. Ideally, start sowing in late winter or early spring. Plant the seeds in nutrient-rich, loose potting compost. Only cover the seeds lightly with soil, as they need light to germinate. Make sure that the seed pots are in a warm, bright location, ideally at a temperature of 20-25 °C. Germination usually takes 10-20 days. Make sure that the soil is always moist, but not wet. As soon as the seedlings are 5 cm high, they can be pricked out and later transferred to the open ground or larger pots.

Harvest, use & storage

Solanum ferox bears small, yellow-orange fruits that have a pleasantly tart flavor. The fruits are harvested as soon as they have reached their full color and can be easily removed from the stem. You can eat the fruits fresh, process them into sauces or chutneys or use them in Asian cuisine. For a longer shelf life, it is advisable to freeze the fruit or pickle it in vinegar. They can also be stored in a cool place for up to two weeks.

Tips & Tricks

To ensure that your Solanum ferox plant thrives optimally, give it a sunny, sheltered location. Make sure to water it regularly, but avoid waterlogging. Fertilize with an organic liquid fertilizer every two to three weeks during the growing season to ensure a rich harvest. If you plant the plant outdoors, wait until after the last frosts, as Solanum ferox is sensitive to the cold. The plant is also quite easy to care for and resistant to many common pests.

Solanum ferox originally comes from Southeast Asia and is closely related to the tomato. The fruits are prized in many tropical regions and are often used in Thai cuisine in particular. In addition to its fruity taste, the plant also has an impressive appearance with its large, velvety leaves and hairy stems. The fruits are also rich in vitamins and antioxidants, making them a healthy and exotic treat.
