Sowing instructions

The cultivation of Solanum muricatumbetter known as pepino, is best grown in a warm and sheltered area. You can start the seeds in early spring, from February, in a growing medium. Make sure that the substrate is nutrient-rich and well-drained. Sprinkle the seeds only lightly on the soil and cover them with a thin layer. Germination takes place at a constant temperature of around 20 to 25°C after approx. two to four weeks. Keep the substrate evenly moist during this time, but avoid waterlogging. As soon as the seedlings are strong enough and the weather has stabilized, you can put them outside.

Harvest, use & storage

After successful cultivation, you will be able to harvest the first fruits in late summer or fall. The fruits are ripe when they turn yellow and give slightly. You can eat the sweet pepino fruits fresh, enjoy them in fruit salads or process them into jam. They are best stored in a cool, dry place. Fully ripe fruit will keep for a few days, or even up to a week in the fridge. Make sure to handle the fruit carefully as they are sensitive to bruising.

Tips & Tricks

Solanum muricatum loves sunny, sheltered locations and loose, humus-rich soil. To promote a rich harvest, you should water and fertilize the plants regularly, but avoid waterlogging. A layer of mulch around the plants helps to retain moisture in the soil. As pepinos are sensitive to frost, it is advisable to grow them in pots so that you can bring them indoors if frost threatens. Also make sure to protect the plants from strong winds, as the branches are brittle.

Worth knowing

The pepino originally comes from South America and belongs to the nightshade family. Its exotic-looking fruit tastes like a mixture of melon and pear and is a great addition to any garden. In addition to its delicious taste, the pepino contains valuable vitamins and minerals, making it a healthy snack.
