Sowing instructions

Would you like to grow Salvia greggii, also known as autumn sage, in your garden? Then it's best to start in spring when temperatures are consistently above 18°C. The seeds should only be lightly covered with soil, as they are light germinators. Keep the soil evenly moist until the seedlings appear. This usually takes 10 to 21 days. Take care not to sow the seeds too densely so that the plants have enough space to grow later.

Tips and tricks

A sunny location is ideal for optimal growth of Salvia greggii. This plant loves the sun and produces its most beautiful flowers in plenty of light. The soil should be well-drained to prevent waterlogging. Regular but moderate fertilization with a low-nitrogen fertilizer promotes flower growth. Cut the plants back slightly after the first flowering to encourage renewed flowering in late summer. Removing faded flowers also promotes a longer flowering period.

Salvia greggii is not only popular because of its bright colors, but also because of its attraction to bees and butterflies. The plant originates from the south of the USA and Mexico and is known for its drought tolerance. It is ideal for rock gardens, borders or as a container plant. Protection is recommended in winter, as Salvia greggii is only partially frost-hardy. With the right care, you can enjoy this easy-care and attractive plant for many years.
