Sowing instructions

Salvia verticillata, also known as whorled sage, is an attractive perennial that will add a splash of color to your garden. To enjoy these beautiful flowers, start sowing in spring. Use well-drained soil and sow the seeds about 1-2 mm deep. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging to promote germination. Germination usually takes place within 14 to 21 days at an optimum temperature of 18-22°C. You can transfer the plants outdoors after about 6-8 weeks when there is no longer any risk of frost.

Tips and tricks

Salvia verticillata loves sunny to semi-shady locations. A spot with sufficient light ensures lush flowering. Water regularly but sparingly to encourage root growth. Make sure the soil is well-drained, as the plant does not tolerate waterlogging. Pruning after flowering encourages a second flowering phase and keeps the plant compact and bushy. To support growth, you can use an organic fertilizer in spring.

Salvia verticillata is not only an eye-catcher in your garden, but also a magnet for bees and butterflies. The plant is perennial and hardy, which means it comes back year after year. It is also relatively easy to care for and resistant to most pests. Due to its medicinal properties, it was also used in folk medicine in the past.
