Sowing instructions

The cultivation of Thymus serpyllum, also known as sand thyme, begins with sowing. You can sow the seeds either in spring or fall. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Scatter the seeds evenly over the prepared area and cover them lightly with soil - they need light to germinate. Keep the soil moist, but avoid waterlogging. You will see the first seedlings within 14 to 21 days.

Tips and tricks

To promote a dense and healthy plant cover, it is helpful to thin out the seedlings after germination. Leave about 15-20 cm space between the plants. Thymus serpyllum is very drought tolerant, but requires regular watering during the growth phase. Once established, it requires little care and is extremely resistant to diseases and pests. Pruning in spring encourages bushier growth and abundant flowering.

Worth knowing

Thymus serpyllum is not only a pretty ground cover, but also a valuable plant for bees and other pollinators. The small, pink to purple flowers attract numerous insects and promote biodiversity in your garden. Sand thyme is also hardy and can easily survive cold winters. You can use the leaves and flowers for tea or as a spice - they have a mild, aromatic flavor that adds a special touch to many dishes.
