Sowing instructions:

Before you start sowing, choose a suitable location for your winter savory plants. Satureja montana thrives best in a sunny spot with well-drained soil.

1. Preparation of the floor: Loosen the soil well and remove weeds and stones. If the soil is too dense, adding sand or compost can help to improve drainage.
2. Sowing time: The best time for sowing is in early spring, as soon as there is no risk of frost. You can either sow the seeds directly outdoors or pre-grow them in pots and transplant them outdoors later.
3. Sowing method: Scatter the Satureja montana seeds evenly on the prepared surface or in the pots. Cover them lightly with soil and press them down gently to ensure good soil contact.
4. Irrigation: Keep the soil moist during the germination phase, but avoid waterlogging as this can lead to rot. Once the plants are established, they will need less water, but still keep the soil evenly moist.

Tips and tricks:

• Cut: Regular pruning promotes compact growth and stimulates the production of fresh foliage. Cut the plants back slightly after the flowering period to maintain their vitality.
• Protection from the cold: Mountain savory can tolerate frost, but young plants should be protected from heavy frost for the first few years until they are fully established.
• Harvest time: The leaves can be harvested all year round, but the flavor is most intense before the plant flowers. Cut off the tips of the shoots and dry them for later use.
