Sowing instructions

If you want to grow Epilobium hirsutum, also known as shaggy willowherb, in your garden, it is best to start sowing in spring or fall. The seeds are cold germinators, which means that they need a cold period to germinate optimally. Sprinkle the seeds directly onto the soil and cover them only lightly with a thin layer of soil - they are light germinators and need light to sprout. A moist, nutrient-rich soil and a partially shaded location are ideal. Make sure to keep the soil slightly moist at all times so that the seeds do not dry out. You should see the first seedlings after about 2-4 weeks.

Harvest, use & storage

Once the plant is fully mature and flowers in late summer, you can harvest the leaves and flowers. The plant is known for its medicinal properties, especially in traditional herbalism. You can dry the leaves and use them for teas, which are used to support the urinary tract and for prostate problems. To best preserve the valuable ingredients, you should store the plant parts in a dry, well-ventilated place. Storing the dried leaves in an airtight container protects them from moisture and ensures a long shelf life.

Tips & Tricks

Shaggy willowherb is an easy-care plant that grows quickly and abundantly. However, make sure that it can spread widely. If you don't want it to overgrow your garden, it is advisable to cut the plant back regularly. A border in the bed can also be helpful. Epilobium hirsutum also attracts bees and butterflies, which will further enrich your garden.

Worth knowing

Epilobium hirsutum is a native plant that is mainly found in wetlands. It reaches a height of up to 2 meters and blooms from July to September in bright pink. In nature, shaggy willowherb is often valued as a medicinal plant and is considered a valuable contribution to biodiversity.
