Ligusticum lucidum, also known as "shining lovage", is a perennial plant from the umbellifer family (Apiaceae). The aromatic seeds of this impressive plant are not only decorative, but can also be used in a variety of ways - whether for the herb garden, natural medicine or as an insect magnet.

Sowing instructions

To ensure that your Ligusticum lucidum seeds germinate optimally, you should follow a few important steps:

  1. Choice of location: Choose a semi-shady to sunny location with well-drained, humus-rich soil.
  2. Sowing time: The best time for sowing is spring (March to May) or fall (September to October).
  3. Pre-germination: A cold treatment (stratification) of about 2-4 weeks in the refrigerator can improve the germination rate.
  4. Sowing: Cover the seeds only lightly with soil (max. 0.5 cm deep) and moisten well.
  5. Germination period: Germination can take 2-6 weeks. Keep the soil moist at all times, but avoid waterlogging.

Harvest, use & storage

After about 1-2 years you can harvest the seeds and leaves of the plant:

  • Seeds: When the umbels turn brown in late summer, you can carefully harvest the seeds, dry them and store them in an airtight container.
  • Leaves: Young leaves are suitable as a spicy addition to soups and salads.
  • Use: Ligusticum lucidum is traditionally used in naturopathy, especially for teas and extracts.
  • Storage: The seeds remain germinable for up to two years in a dark, dry place.

Tips and tricks

  • Combine the plant with other herbs such as parsley or lovage for a harmonious herb corner.
  • Regularly cut back wilted leaves to maintain the plant's vitality.
  • Use Ligusticum lucidum as a bee pasture - the flowers attract many useful insects.

Worth knowing

Ligusticum lucidum is often confused with the well-known lovage, but has its own characteristic spice. The plant is hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -15 °C. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it is valued for its many properties.
