Sowing instructions

Would you like to admire impressive mullein in your garden? Growing Verbascum densiflorum (large-flowered mullein) starts with sowing its seeds. You can sow the seeds directly outdoors either in spring or fall. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. You should only sprinkle the seeds lightly on the soil, as they are light germinators and do not need contact with the soil. The first tender seedlings will appear after around two to four weeks. Keep the soil evenly moist during this time, but avoid waterlogging so as not to endanger the young plants.

Harvest, use & storage

The flowers of the large-flowered mullein can be harvested from the second year of growth, when they are in full bloom from June to September. They are ideal for use in tea blends, tinctures or as a gentle remedy for respiratory diseases. It is best to harvest the flowers in the morning after the dew has dried and dry them in a shady, airy place. It is best to use airtight containers for storage in order to preserve the healing powers of the flowers for as long as possible.

Tips & Tricks

Verbascum densiflorum is an easy-care plant that is well suited to natural gardens. Make sure that the location is sufficiently sunny, as the mullein loves warmth and light. If you want the plant to self-seed, simply leave some of the faded inflorescences. To encourage abundant flowering, you can regularly remove wilted flowers. And don't worry, the large-flowered mullein is extremely drought-resistant and only needs extra water during long dry periods.
