Sowing instructions

Verbascum bombyciferum, also known as woolly mullein, is an impressive plant that will enrich your garden with its majestic appearance. Sowing is quite straightforward and is best done in spring or late summer. Sprinkle the seeds on the surface of well-drained soil and cover them only lightly with a thin layer of soil. Press the soil down gently and keep the seedbed evenly moist, but not wet. Germination usually takes place within 2-3 weeks at temperatures between 15-20°C. You can either sow the seeds directly outdoors or pre-grow them in pots for later planting outdoors.

Tips and tricks

To ensure that your Verbascum bombyciferum thrives, choose a sunny spot, as this plant prefers full sun. Make sure that the soil is well-drained to avoid waterlogging. Verbascum bombyciferum is relatively drought-resistant, but requires sufficient water during the germination and growth phase. Once established, the plant is very easy to care for and only requires occasional watering during longer dry periods. Remove withered inflorescences to encourage the formation of new flowers and keep the plant healthy. In strong winds, it can be helpful to support the plants as the tall inflorescences can easily topple over.

Worth knowing

Verbascum bombyciferum, also known as silver mullein, originally comes from the mountainous regions of Turkey. Its silvery, hairy leaves and impressive inflorescences, which can grow up to two meters high, make it a real eye-catcher in any garden. The plant is a biennial, which means that it forms a rosette of leaves in the first year and flowers in the second year. After flowering, the plant usually dies, but leaves behind numerous seeds that can provide natural self-seeding. The flowers attract bees and other pollinating insects, making them a valuable addition to the natural garden. Verbascum bombyciferum was formerly used in folk medicine and is still known today for its healing properties, especially for respiratory diseases.
