Sowing instructions

If you want to grow Silybum marianum, also known as milk thistle, there are a few important steps to follow. Milk thistle is a robust plant that is both ornamental and medicinal. It prefers a sunny location with well-drained soil. Start sowing in spring when there is no longer any risk of frost. Sow the seeds directly into the soil, about 1 to 2 cm deep, and keep the soil evenly moist. Germination usually takes place within two weeks.

Tips and tricks

• Irrigation: Keep the milk thistle plants regularly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
• Floor: A well-drained, humus-rich soil is ideal for milk thistle. If necessary, you can add sand or gravel to improve drainage.
• Fertilization: Fertilization is not normally necessary, as milk thistle does well in nutrient-poor soil.
• Pest control: Milk thistle is relatively resistant to pests, but watch out for aphids and caterpillars.
• Harvest: The seeds can be harvested when the flower heads are dry and the seeds can be easily removed.
