Crataegus monogyna, also known as the single-stemmed hawthorn, is a robust and versatile shrub that not only impresses with its beautiful white flowers and bright red fruits, but also provides habitat and food for numerous insects and birds. With these seeds, you can enrich your garden with a low-maintenance and near-natural plant.
Sowing instructions
Crataegus monogyna seeds require cold stratification in order to germinate. This means that they have to go through a longer cold period to break their dormancy. Place the seeds in moist sand for around 3 to 4 months and store them in the refrigerator. Alternatively, you can sow them directly outdoors in the fall so that they stratify naturally over the winter. Make sure that the seeds are only lightly covered with soil, as they need light to germinate. Germination time can be between 12 and 18 months, so be patient!
Harvest, use & storage
The fruits of the single-stemmed hawthorn ripen in late summer to early fall and then glow an intense red. You can harvest them and process them into jelly, juice or tea. The flowers are also suitable for making tea. Store the dried fruits and flowers in a dark, dry place to preserve their active ingredients. Note, however, that the seeds are not suitable for consumption as they contain toxic cyanogens.
Tips and tricks
- Choice of location: The hawthorn prefers sunny to semi-shady locations and can cope with almost any soil - ideal for natural gardens.
- Care: It is extremely easy to care for and hardly needs any water once established. Occasional pruning promotes branching and flower formation.
- Protection against pests: Hawthorn is very resistant to most pests and diseases. Nevertheless, good air circulation helps to prevent fungal infestation.
Worth knowing
Crataegus monogyna is not only an aesthetic eye-catcher, but also ecologically valuable. The flowers provide insects such as bees and butterflies with plenty of nectar, while the fruits are an important source of food for birds in winter. In folk medicine, hawthorn flowers and fruits are traditionally used to support heart function.
