Spinacia oleracea "Winterriesen Stamm Verdil" is a particularly robust and high-yielding spinach variety that is ideal for sowing in the fall and winter. With its large, dark green leaves, it is perfect for fresh salads, soups or as a vitamin-rich side dish. Thanks to its high cold tolerance, it can even survive frosty temperatures and provides you with fresh greenery during the cold months.

Sowing instructions

Sowing is carried out according to the desired harvest time:

• Fall sowing (for winter harvest): Sow directly outdoors from September to October.
• Spring sowing (for early harvest): Sowing is possible from February to April.

Choose a sunny to semi-shady location with humus-rich, well-drained soil. Sow the seeds approx. 2-3 cm deep in rows 20-30 cm apart. Ensure even moisture, but avoid waterlogging.

Harvest, use & storage

You can start harvesting after about 6-8 weeks. Harvest individual leaves or cut the entire spinach just above the ground - this way the plant can often grow back.

• Fresh consumption: Ideal for salads, smoothies or as an ingredient in soups and stir-fries.
• Storage: Fresh spinach will keep for 2-3 days in the fridge. Alternatively, you can blanch and freeze it to preserve it for longer.

Tips and tricks

✅ Re-sow every two to three weeks for a continuous harvest.
Mulch the soil to retain moisture and reduce weed growth.
✅ Avoid sowing too late in the spring - spinach tends to bolt when temperatures are too high.
Combine spinach with carrots or radishes as a mixed crop for optimum soil and nutrient utilization.
