Sowing instructions

Hypericum bellum, also known as Chinese St. John's wort, is an undemanding plant that can easily be grown from seed. Start sowing in spring, preferably in seed trays or small pots. The seeds are light germinators, so you should only press them down lightly and not cover them with soil. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. A germination temperature of around 18-20 °C is ideal, and you will see the first seedlings after around 2-4 weeks. As soon as the young plants are strong enough, you can plant them outdoors. Ensure a sunny to semi-shady location and well-drained soil.

Harvest, use & storage

Hypericum bellum blooms in summer and offers you beautiful, golden-yellow flowers that are ideal for flower arrangements. If you want to use the plant for its healing properties, you can harvest the flowers and use them to make oils or tinctures. It is best to cut the flowers on a dry day when they are fully bloomed. You can use them fresh or dry them and store them for later. Dried flowers are best stored in an airtight container in a dark, cool place to preserve their active ingredients.

Tips & Tricks

To encourage the most abundant flowering possible, you should cut back Hypericum bellum regularly. This promotes growth and the formation of new flowers. Even though the plant is quite easy to care for, it will appreciate a light dose of fertilizer in spring. A layer of mulch is particularly useful in summer to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Worth knowing

Hypericum bellum is not only a feast for the eyes in your garden, but also a valuable plant for bees and butterflies. It is also frost-hardy and can be overwintered without any problems. In traditional Chinese medicine, the flowers and leaves are used to make teas and extracts, which are said to have calming and anti-inflammatory properties.
