Sowing instructions

The cultivation of Physalis grisea seedsalso known as Andean cherry or Molly cherry, is uncomplicated and a pleasure to grow. Sow the seeds from February to April in seed trays or small pots. Use loose, nutrient-rich soil that is well-drained. Press the seeds lightly into the soil, but do not cover them completely - physalis seeds need light to germinate. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet, and place the containers in a bright, warm place with a temperature of 20-25 °C. The first seedlings will appear after about 10-14 days. As soon as the plants have reached a size of 5-10 cm, you can transfer them to larger pots or to the open ground as soon as there is no longer any danger of frost.

Harvest, use & storage

Physalis grisea bears fruit from July into the fall. You can recognize the ripe fruit by the fact that the papery husk is dry and slightly brown. Harvest the fruit carefully so as not to damage the plant. The sweet and sour fruits can be used in a variety of ways: whether raw as a snack, in fruit salads, desserts, smoothies or as jam - they always taste delicious. It is best to store the fruit in a cool, dry place. They will keep fresh in their skin for several weeks.

Tips and tricks

  • Choice of location: Choose a sunny to semi-shady location with protection from the wind for strong plants.
  • Fertilization: Fertilize the plants regularly with an organic fertilizer to promote a rich harvest.
  • Irrigation: Water moderately but regularly, especially during longer dry periods.
  • Overwintering: Physalis can die from frost. In mild regions, you can try to overwinter the plants by bringing them into a frost-free room.

Worth knowing

Physalis grisea is a close relative of the tomato and belongs to the nightshade family. Originally from South America, it is known for its numerous health benefits. The fruit contains lots of vitamin C, beta-carotene and iron and strengthens the immune system. Physalis is also a bee-friendly plant that attracts pollinating insects with its yellow flowers.
