Crambe tatarica, also known as Tatar sea kale, is a hardy and easy-care plant that is ideal for growing in home gardens. Its seeds are easy to sow and develop into strong plants with attractive, edible leaves and flowers.

Sowing instructions

Ideally, Crambe tatarica seeds should be sown in spring or fall. Choose a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Pre-cooling the seeds (stratification) for around two to four weeks at 2-5 °C can improve the germination rate. Sow the seeds about 1-2 cm deep in the soil and keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet. Germination can take a few weeks, so be patient.

Harvest, use & storage

The young leaves of Crambe tatarica are edible and can be prepared in a similar way to cabbage or spinach. The flower buds and young shoots are also edible and add a slightly spicy note to dishes. It is best harvested in spring when the leaves are still tender. The seeds can be dried for the next sowing and stored in a cool, dark place.

Tips and tricks

• Choose a location with well-aerated soil to avoid waterlogging.
• Crambe tatarica is very drought-resistant, but benefits from occasional watering during longer dry periods.
• Cut off withered flower heads to encourage seed formation and prevent uncontrolled spread.
• The plant is hardy and can overwinter outdoors. However, light mulch protection can be beneficial.

Crambe tatarica belongs to the cruciferous family and is related to the well-known sea kale (Crambe maritima). The plant is particularly resistant to pests and diseases, making it a sustainable choice for semi-natural gardens. Its deep roots help to improve the soil and control erosion.
