Sowing instructions:
Lavender, with its calming scent and pretty purple flowers, is not only a delight for the senses, but also an ornamental for any garden. If you would like to grow the enchanting lavender yourself, here are a few useful tips for sowing:
- TimeLavender seeds are ideally sown in spring or early summer. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil.
- Preparation of the floorLoosen the soil well and remove weeds and stones. Lavender thrives best in slightly alkaline soil.
- Sowing methodSprinkle the lavender seeds evenly over the prepared soil surface and cover lightly with soil. Press the soil down gently to ensure that the seeds are in contact with moist soil.
- IrrigationKeep the soil moist, but not wet, during germination. Avoid soaking the soil as this can impair germination.
- GerminationLavender seeds usually take about 2-3 weeks to germinate. Keep the sowing site warm and sunny during this time.
Tips and tricks:
- Regular wateringLavender does not like standing in damp soil. Make sure you only water the lavender when the soil is dry to avoid waterlogging.
- Correct cutTo encourage a compact and lush lavender bush, you should cut back the lavender after flowering. Remove the faded inflorescences to stimulate new flower growth.
- WinteringLavender is hardy, but in cold regions it can be advantageous to cover the lavender with a layer of mulch to protect it from frost.
Worth knowing:
- Versatile useLavender is not only a pretty ornamental shrub, but is also valued for its calming and aromatic properties. Lavender oil is often used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation and reduce stress.
- Attracting insectsLavender not only attracts people with its scent, but is also a magnet for bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects. This makes it a valuable plant for promoting biodiversity in the garden.
