Sowing instructions

Prepare your garden for a small miracle! Solanum nigrum seeds are easy to grow and require little care. Sow the seeds directly in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil in spring as soon as the danger of frost has passed. Sow the seeds about 0.5 cm deep and 30 cm apart. Keep the soil moist, but not wet, to encourage germination, which will take place after 10-14 days. Provide a sunny to semi-shady location - this is what these robust plants like best!

Harvest, use & storage

As soon as the plants have reached a height of around 20 cm, you can start harvesting the first leaves. The fruits themselves are only ripe when they are black and soft - this is when they have developed their full aroma. The harvest time is between July and October. The leaves and fruits are excellent for use in soups, stews or as a side dish. Store the fresh leaves in the fridge, where they will keep for up to a week. You can dry or freeze the fruits to store them for longer.

Tips & Tricks

For a particularly rich harvest, it is worth regularly removing the side shoots so that the plant can put all its energy into fruit growth. Be careful not to overwater the plants, as they are sensitive to waterlogging. A little mulch around the base of the plant helps to retain moisture and keep out weeds.
