Sowing instructions

Would you like to grow gorgeous, colorful beans in your own garden? Then the Phaseolus coccineus "Preisgewinner" is the perfect choice! You should sow the seeds directly outdoors from mid-May, when there is no longer any risk of frost. Choose a sunny location with nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. Plant the seeds about 3-5 cm deep in the soil and keep a distance of 30 cm between the plants. Make sure to water them sufficiently, especially during the germination phase. The first seedlings will appear within 8-14 days.

Harvest, use & storage

You can harvest the first fresh beans from July. The "prize winner" produces particularly long and fleshy pods that can be used both young as tender beans or mature as dried beans. Freshly harvested beans taste great in salads, stews or as a side dish. Would you like to keep the beans for longer? No problem - simply dry or freeze them. The dried beans can then be used later for soups or stews.

Tips & Tricks

To ensure a bountiful harvest, you should water regularly, especially during the flowering period. A climbing aid, such as a trellis or pole structure, is also advisable, as the "prize-winner" beans can grow up to 3 meters high. Regular harvesting also encourages the formation of new pods and increases the overall yield.

Worth knowing

The magnificent red flowers of the Phaseolus coccineus are not only an eye-catcher in the garden, but also attract bees and other beneficial insects. Did you know that this bean originally comes from the Andes? Today, however, it is also a popular crop in our latitudes and is both decorative and nutritious.
