Sowing instructions

Sowing Codonopsis pilosula seeds is easy and requires little effort. Start in spring by sowing the seeds in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. Press them lightly into the soil, but do not cover them too deeply, as Codonopsis seeds are light germinators. Keep the substrate evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. At a germination temperature of around 15-20 °C, the first tender shoots will appear after two to three weeks. As soon as the young plants are strong enough, you can plant them outdoors, where they prefer a sunny to semi-shady location.

Harvest, use & storage

The roots of the Codonopsis pilosula plant, also known as "poor man's ginseng", are ready for harvesting after around three years. They are easy to dig up, but should be carefully cleaned and dried in a dry, airy place to preserve their valuable ingredients. In traditional Chinese medicine, the root is often used to strengthen the immune system and as a tonic. After drying, you can store the roots in an airtight container to preserve their freshness and effectiveness.

Tips & Tricks

Codonopsis pilosula thrives particularly well in humus-rich soil and does not tolerate extreme heat. Make sure to mulch the soil regularly to retain moisture and keep weeds at bay. If you want to grow the plant in pots, choose a deep pot as the roots need a lot of space. A slightly sheltered location ensures that the plant is less susceptible to pests and diseases.

Worth knowing

Codonopsis pilosula, also known as "Dang Shen", belongs to the bellflower family. Its roots are similar to ginseng, but it is much easier to care for and less demanding to grow. It is not only valuable for your health, but also an ornamental plant in your garden thanks to its delicate, bell-shaped flowers.
