Sowing instructions

Sanicula europaea, also known as forest sanicle, is a perennial plant that is at home in shady forests. To ensure that the seeds germinate well, you should sow them in the fall. Direct sowing outdoors is ideal, as the seeds require a cold germination phase. Prepare the soil by loosening it and clearing it of weeds. Press the seeds lightly into the soil and cover them thinly with soil - they need light to germinate optimally. Make sure to keep the soil moist at all times without causing waterlogging.

Harvest, use & storage

You can harvest the leaves and flowers of the wood anise from May to July. The plant is particularly known for its healing powers: In folk medicine, it is often used to treat inflammation or respiratory problems. The leaves also have a beneficial effect when prepared as a tea. After harvesting, you should dry the plant parts in a shady, well-ventilated place. They can then be stored in an airtight container for up to a year.

Tips & Tricks

Sanicula europaea prefers shady to semi-shady locations with humus-rich, moist soil. If you want to sow in a sunny garden area, choose a spot that is in the shade during midday. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, as the plant prefers moist soil. If you want to cultivate the plant in pots, ensure good drainage to avoid waterlogging. Regular removal of weeds promotes the healthy growth of the plant.
