Sowing instructions

The cultivation of Ligusticum scoticum (Scottish sea fennel) from seed is easy and rewarding! Sow the seeds directly outdoors in spring or fall. As they are cold germinators, the seeds need a cold period to stimulate germination. Alternatively, you can stratify them in the fridge for 4 to 6 weeks before planting them in seedling pots. Keep the soil moist, but avoid waterlogging. A semi-shaded location with well-drained, slightly moist soil is ideal. The seeds will start to germinate after around 3 to 6 weeks. Patience is the key - Scotch fennel needs time to establish itself.

Harvest, use & storage

Harvest time begins around the second year, when the plant is well established. You can harvest the young leaves in spring and summer to use fresh in salads, soups or as a seasoning. The roots and seeds of the plant are also used in cooking and natural medicine. To store the leaves, dry them gently in an airy place or freeze them immediately after harvesting. Dried seeds and roots can be stored in dark, airtight containers.

Tips & Tricks

Ligusticum scoticum is relatively easy to care for. Pruning after flowering encourages new growth. Make sure to water the plant regularly, especially during dry periods. It prefers coastal climates, but also thrives in less salty environments. A tip: Mulch the soil around the plant to retain moisture and reduce weed growth.
