Sowing instructions

To successfully grow Oenothera biennis, also known as common evening primrose, it is best to start in spring. Sow the seeds directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Press the seeds lightly into the soil and keep a distance of approx. 20-30 cm between the plants. Water regularly, but avoid waterlogging. Germination takes about 2-3 weeks.

Harvest, use & storage

The common evening primrose flowers from the second year of sowing. You can harvest the flowers, leaves and roots. The flowers are ideal for teas or salads, while the roots can be prepared as vegetables in the kitchen. For storage, it is advisable to dry the parts and keep them in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.

Tips & Tricks

The common evening primrose is a biennial plant that only forms a rosette of leaves in the first year and flowers in the second year. Make sure to water the plants regularly, especially during dry periods, to ensure optimal growth. Light pruning after flowering will encourage a second flowering phase. To control seed dispersal, you can remove the faded stems in good time.

Worth knowing

The common evening primrose is not only a feast for the eyes in your garden, but also a valuable medicinal plant. Its oil is traditionally used for skin problems and hormonal disorders. It also attracts numerous beneficial insects with its fragrant flowers, which further enriches your garden.
