Sowing instructions
To successfully grow Verbascum phoeniceum "wild form", start sowing in spring or late summer. Choose a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained, humus-rich soil. The seeds need light to germinate, so press them lightly onto the soil and do not cover them with soil. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. You should see the first sprouts within 14 to 21 days. Once established, the plant will develop into a low-maintenance, perennial beauty.
Harvest, use & storage
The bright, purple-red flowers of Verbascum phoeniceum are not only an eye-catcher in the garden, but also a valuable source of food for insects. If you like, you can cut some flowers and use them as cut flowers in a vase - they will keep for several days. For propagation or to obtain seeds for the next season, leave some inflorescences to fully ripen. You can harvest the seed heads after they have finished flowering and store the seeds in a cool, dry place. Stored correctly, they will remain viable for several years.
Tips & Tricks
Verbascum phoeniceum is a robust and easy-care plant that adapts well to different conditions. However, make sure to loosen the soil regularly to avoid waterlogging. Once established, the plant also copes well with dry periods. If you don't see it flowering in the first year, be patient - it often only shows its full flowering splendor in the second year. Cut off the faded stems to prolong the flowering period. In a near-natural garden, the "wild form" also provides a valuable habitat for bees and butterflies.
Worth knowing
Verbascum phoeniceum, also known as purple mullein, is native to Europe and Asia and is known for its beautiful, bright flowers. It belongs to the Scrophulariaceae family and is a bee-friendly plant that attracts wild bees and bumblebees. The plant reaches a height of up to 80 cm and flowers between May and July. The wild form is characterized by its natural robustness and resistance to pests, making it an ideal choice for semi-natural gardens.
