Sowing instructions

Sowing Ocimum basilicum "Cinnamon type" is particularly successful if you follow a few simple steps. Sow the seeds in seed trays from April or directly outdoors from mid-May as soon as the risk of frost has passed. Sprinkle the seeds evenly over the moist soil and cover them only lightly with a thin layer of soil - basil is a light germinator. Place the seed trays in a warm, bright place and keep the soil constantly moist, but not too wet. At temperatures around 20°C, the seeds will germinate in around 7-14 days. If you plant the plants outdoors, make sure they are in a sunny and sheltered location.

Harvest, use & storage

You can harvest the first leaves of your Ocimum basilicum "Cinnamon type" after around 6-8 weeks. It is best to cut the shoots in the morning when the essential oil content is at its highest. Use the fresh leaves to add a unique flavor to your dishes such as salads, pasta or pesto. To preserve the basil, you can dry or freeze the leaves. However, it loses some of its aroma when dried, so freezing is the better method to preserve the intense flavor.

Tips & Tricks

To ensure that your basil grows vigorously, regularly cut back the shoot tips. This encourages branching and ensures a bushy plant. Avoid letting the plant flower, as this reduces the aroma of the leaves. You should also avoid waterlogging, as basil is sensitive to too much water. The plant likes to be watered regularly but moderately.
