Sowing instructions
To keep your Barbarea vulgaris "Variegata" successfully, you only need a few steps. Start sowing in spring or fall. Prepare a nutrient-rich, well-drained soil for this. The seeds can be sown directly outdoors. Sprinkle them evenly over the soil surface and cover them only lightly with soil - they need some light to germinate. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not too wet. At an optimum temperature of 10-18 °C, you will see the first seedlings after just 2-4 weeks.
Harvest, use & storage
The leaves of your Barbarea vulgaris "Variegata" can be harvested from a height of 5-10 cm. It is best to only cut the outer leaves so as not to impair the growth of the plant. These slightly pungent leaves are ideal for adding to salads, smoothies or as a seasoning herb in hot dishes. Make sure that the plant has enough time to regrow after harvesting. Freshly harvested leaves have the best flavor. However, you can also dry or freeze them to preserve them for later.
Tips & Tricks
So that your Barbarea vulgaris "Variegata" grows strong and healthy, plant it in a sunny to semi-shady location. It tolerates light frost, so you can still harvest in the fall. Water regularly, but make sure that it does not become waterlogged. The plant is easy to care for and does not require any special fertilizers. A little tip: cut off withered shoots regularly to encourage flower growth and at the same time prevent self-seeding if you don't want it to.
