Sowing instructions

To grow Ocimum basilicum var. thyrsiflorum "Thai type", you need a sunny spot, ideally in a greenhouse or on a windowsill. Sow the seeds from February to April in seedling pots or directly in the bed. The seeds should only be lightly covered with soil - they need light to germinate. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet. At a temperature of around 20°C, the seeds will germinate within 7 to 14 days. After germination, you should prick out the strongest young plants and plant them outdoors or in larger pots from mid-May. Make sure that the sensitive basil plants are not put outside until after the Ice Saints.

Harvest, use & storage

You can harvest the first leaves around 6 to 8 weeks after sowing. It is best to harvest the young leaves and shoot tips regularly to promote the bushy growth of the plant. Thai basil gives your dishes an incomparably spicy note - especially in Asian dishes such as curries, soups or wok dishes. The leaves taste intensely of aniseed and licorice and are most aromatic when fresh. Freezing is better than drying for storage, as the leaves retain their aroma better this way.

Tips & Tricks

Thai basil loves warmth and sun. Therefore, place the plants in a sheltered, sunny spot. Avoid waterlogging by placing the plant in well-drained soil and ensuring good drainage. Regular pruning ensures dense growth and keeps the plant in the growth phase for longer. Remove the flowers in good time to promote leaf growth. When fertilizing, it is sufficient to use an organic liquid fertilizer every two weeks.

Worth knowing

Thai basil is not only a popular culinary herb, but also an ornamental plant. It blooms beautifully with purple flowers and attracts bees and butterflies. The plant originally comes from South East Asia and has a much stronger and spicier taste than our native basil. It is therefore ideal for preparing exotic and authentic dishes.
