Sowing instructions

Geum urbanum is best sown in spring or fall. You should first place the seeds in the refrigerator for one to two weeks to simulate the natural cold layer of the seeds. You can then sow them directly outdoors or pre-grow them in pots. It is important that the soil is well-drained and rich in nutrients. Make sure that the seeds are only lightly covered with soil, as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil evenly moist during germination, but avoid waterlogging. The first seedlings should appear after about two to four weeks.

Harvest, use & storage

Geum urbanum is not only an attractive ornamental plant, but also has a wide range of uses. The roots of the clove root can be harvested in the fall and are traditionally used as a remedy, for example in teas to alleviate stomach complaints. To harvest the roots, carefully dig up the plant and cut off the roots. Store the harvested roots in a dry and cool place and they will keep for several months. The leaves and flowers can also be used for teas or ointments.

Tips & Tricks

Geum urbanum grows particularly well in partial shade, but also tolerates sunny locations as long as the soil remains sufficiently moist. If you want to encourage abundant flowering, it is advisable to cut the plant back regularly. This will allow it to keep producing new flowers throughout the summer. A layer of mulch around the plant also helps to retain moisture in the soil and suppress weeds.

Geum urbanum is a perennial, hardy plant that can grow up to 60 cm tall. The sweet, slightly spicy scent of the roots, which is reminiscent of cloves, is particularly interesting. This scent also gave the plant its name. It also attracts numerous insects such as bees and butterflies, enriching your garden in a natural way.
