Sowing instructions
The seeds of Cucumis melo "Queen Anne's pocket melon" should ideally be started indoors between March and May. Fill small pots with potting compost and place one seed in each about 1 cm deep. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet. A bright, warm place on the windowsill or in a mini-greenhouse is ideal, as the seeds need a temperature of 20-25°C to germinate. The first seedlings should be visible after around 7-14 days. As soon as the seedlings are strong enough, you can transplant them outdoors or into larger pots in May, after the Ice Saints. Make sure they have a sunny, sheltered location with nutrient-rich soil.
Harvest, use & storage
The fruits of "Queen Anne's pocket melon" are small and round, about the size of a mandarin. They are harvested from the end of July until late summer, as soon as the fruits have taken on a bright orange-yellow color and exude an intense fragrance. Although the melon is relatively neutral in taste, it was often placed in trouser pockets or drawers to perfume clothes or rooms in the past due to its pleasant scent. The fruit is also suitable as a decorative addition to salads or desserts. They can be stored in a cool place for about 1-2 weeks.
Tips & Tricks
For a particularly rich harvest, it is advisable to fertilize the plants regularly and always water them sufficiently without causing waterlogging. If you cut back the side shoots of the plant slightly, this will encourage fruit formation. In regions with shorter summers, you can also grow melons in a greenhouse to speed up the ripening process. When transplanting, take care not to damage the delicate roots.
Worth knowing
"Queen Anne's pocket melon has a long history. The fragrant melon was particularly popular in Victorian England, where it served as a natural air freshener. Even today, it is often grown as a curiosity in the garden. Its scientific name is Cucumis melo var. dudaim, and it belongs to the sugar melon family.
