Sowing instructions

Marrubium vulgare, also known as white horehound, is an easy-care plant that you can easily grow in your garden. Start sowing in early spring, preferably in March or April. Sow the seeds directly into loose, well-drained soil and cover them lightly with soil. Keep the soil moist until germination begins after around 14 to 21 days. When the young plants are large enough, you can thin them out to a distance of around 30 cm to give them enough space to develop.

Harvest, use & storage

The leaves and flowers are best harvested in late spring or summer when the plant is in full bloom. Carefully cut off the plant parts and leave them to dry in a shady, well-ventilated place. After drying, you can use the leaves and flowers for teas, tinctures or as an aromatic herb. Airtight containers kept in a cool, dry place are suitable for storage.

Tips & Tricks

Marrubium vulgare prefers sunny locations and dry soil. A little sand in the soil promotes growth and ensures that the plant remains robust and hardy. Water sparingly, as horehound is drought-resistant and needs little water. The plant is also hardy and does not need any special protection from frost.
